Last Friday evening, I stood in the soaring lobby of the O’Shaughnessy auditorium greeting families, friends, and community members to the Friends School of Minnesota’s annual, all-school Martin Luther King Celebration. The excitement and pride amidst the families was clear; one parent told me it was her favorite day of the year, “even better than Christmas!” she declared.
The 7/8 Drama Club performed their play, “The Secret Case of Sherlock Holmes” by Craig Sodaro. Last month, Friends School of Minnesota 3rd and 4th graders performed their original play Within A Gem, a musical mystery which takes place at Plumnut Academy for super heroes. Annie Enneking spent a week at Friends School of Minnesota as our artist in residence November 26-3o, 2012. Teachers collaborated with Annie to plan drama activities that tied into the school year’s curriculum and themes. Annie also led theater activities that spark children’s imagination, inspiring creativity and artistry.
Yea-we did it! All the third and fourth graders produced a great play: The Fairy Tale Never Told. Students brainstormed, wrote, rehearsed, and staged the play. This intensive drama unit is an opportunity for the students to take part in something that is made possible by all 35 of them working together!
