Friends School of Minnesota art teacher Laura Pereira spent her summer doing entomological research and making new encaustic painting which will be shown October 30 – November 2, 2013 at the Flow Art Space. There will be an Artist Reception on November 1, 7-9 p.m. Encaustic is a process in which pigment is mixed with beeswax and applied to the painting surface while hot. Why or why not?” This was a question posed to Friends School of Minnesota kindergarten students before a neighborhood hike to the community garden. The 7/8 Drama Club performed their play, “The Secret Case of Sherlock Holmes” by Craig Sodaro. Third and fourth grade students recently completed a multi-disciplinary study of Minnesota birds. We started with a science unit taught by 3rd-4th grade teacher Kak Jarvis and Environmental Education Coordinator Kris Bennett. Students conducted individual studies of a native bird species of their choice. Friends School of Minnesota art teacher Laura Pereira is a 2013 Minnesota State Arts Board grantee. This grant will allow Laura to spend her summer doing entomological research and encaustic painting. Annie Enneking spent a week at Friends School of Minnesota as our artist in residence November 26-3o, 2012. Teachers collaborated with Annie to plan drama activities that tied into the school year’s curriculum and themes. Annie also led theater activities that spark children’s imagination, inspiring creativity and artistry.
