Student Service Learning: Recycling Program
Our 5th grade students run the recycling program at Friends School of Minnesota. Daily recycling collection and management is just one way we integrate service learning into school life.

Friends School of Minnesota’s 7th and 8th grade Engineering Club once again participated in the MRES Solar Boat Regatta. This boat race held at Baker Lake in Eden Prairie every spring. It is sponsored by the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society (MRES). The rules are pretty simple: boats are powered by the Sun. Each boat is limited to one 12 volt battery and one 85 watt solar panel. The boats are allowed.. Read More
Skipping Stones, FSMN’s summer camping trips for our middle schoolers, turns ten years old this year! Each summer since 2006, groups of FSMN students have gone camping in one of Minnesota’s state parks for five days and four nights. Trips include outdoor adventures such as inner-tubing down the Root River through Lanesboro, exploring caves in southeastern Minnesota, hiking to the top of Barn Bluff in Red Wing, cycling through the pine forests surrounding.. Last Saturday morning, Friends School community members gathered for a community day of service. About 40 students, staff, parents, and alumni helped seniors living in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood by raking leaves. We were able to take care of five different lawns and plan to take care of several more this week as classroom groups go out again. This annual service work is a great way to connect with our neighborhood!

This means that every day right after lunch two 6th grade students gather up food waste from all of the school’s classrooms and lunchrooms and bring it outside to one of our compost tumblers. There it gets mixed together with leaves gathered from around the school yard. In the fall, sixth grade students spend.. Read More
In December, Friends School of Minnesota 5th and 6th grade students visited St. Paul’s Water Treatment Facility. Students learned all about where St. Paul’s drinking water comes from and how it is treated for safety before reaching our taps. Every time I take this tour I have the same impression – this is so impressive, interesting, and important that every person in St. Paul should take the tour. As always,.. Read More
Seventeen 7th and 8th graders joined the Friends School of Minnesota Engineering Club. Advisor Steve Moe (middle school science teacher) worked with students to build a solar boat to race in the Minnesota Solar Regatta in May. The Minnesota Solar Regatta is an annual event sponsored by the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society. Teams participating in the Solar Regatta build or modify a working boat (large enough to carry one student pilot) to compete in.. Read More
Last Friday, sixth grade students learned about and worked the school’s compost. As they have been for the last seven years, the sixth grade class is responsible for running Friends School of Minnesota’s school-wide composting program. Every classroom and our lunch room collects compostable items separately from recycling and landfill waste. Sixth graders collect compost each day from around the school and bring it out back to one of the school’s.. Read More
