By Karen Salter, FSMN Music Teacher

The Mississippi (Kindergarten) students have been very curious about all of the wonderful instruments in the music classroom. They just couldn’t wait to get their hands on the drum set, Orff instruments, and all of the fun and quirky rhythm instruments.

I wanted to give them an opportunity to explore, but I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I asked my 7th and 8th-grade students if they would volunteer during their recess time to run stations for the Kindergarten students and 17 of the 7th and 8th-grade students wanted to help.

I was thrilled to see the middle schoolers working with our young new friends, helping them to play the instruments correctly, showing them the parts of each instrument, and kindly answering questions from our Kindergartens. It was inspiring for me as a teacher to see the knowledge these middle schoolers have gained from general music class and lessons, and to see them sharing it with others was just amazing.

Once again I am reminded of the beauty and creativity of this wonderful school and the kids and families who are a part of it. I am grateful to be a part of this community!
