Dear Friends School of Minnesota Community,
The school committee has completed its search for an interim head of school and has hired Joe McHugh to serve as interim head beginning January 3, 2017. We are looking forward to welcoming Joe to Friends School of Minnesota. We believe he will provide the thoughtful and engaged leadership we need through this transition, and help us prepare for a long-term head of school. We anticipate the search for a long-term head will take a minimum of six months to complete, and may extend to eighteen months.
Joe McHugh comes to FSMN with deep experience in educational, corporate, and non-profit organizations. He has served as the principal of Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago and as chief administrator of the Hill-Murray School in St. Paul, and has held leadership positions with two global organizational consulting firms.
He has published over twenty-five articles in the last five years, and his book, Startled by God: Wisdom from Unexpected Places, was published in 2013. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Detroit; a master of arts from Teachers College, Columbia University; and a master of divinity from Woodstock College, a Jesuit school of theology affiliated with Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He also studied at Chicago’s Jung Institute and received executive coaching certification from the Center for Character-Based Leadership.
Joe has experience managing organizations in transition and experience as a professional coach. He attends the Twin Cities Friends Meeting in St. Paul, and brings a deep understanding and commitment to Quaker process and values.
We are so grateful to Garth Morrisette and Jeannette Lutter-Gardella for their extra service and leadership during this challenging time of transition. They have stepped into their roles on the interim leadership team without hesitation and with tremendous grace and effectiveness. Their dedication and commitment to FSMN cannot be overstated.
We are also grateful for the service of the interim head search committee–Alissa Abelson, James Farnsworth, Gita Ghei, John McVea (clerk), Tatiana Polovenko, Gerald Ronning, Colin Slaby, Monica Trent, and Sue Tuggle. These dedicated members of our community dropped everything to help us discern the best way forward during an intense time of transition. They are to be lauded for their careful consideration and deep care, their attention to detail and process, and their efforts to secure an interim head. Thank you to all of our community members who participated by attending sessions during candidate visits and offering feedback and suggestions.
We look forward to having Joe join the administrative staff and help FSMN continue to be a strong and vibrant community of learners. Please join us in welcoming him in January.
