Shoppers entering the Friends School Plant Sale at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand are offered cardboard strawberry flats to help carry their pots of plants. These strawberry boxes are available to our customers because a group of hard-working volunteers collect and store over 10,000 boxes every year! Can you help?
Lucky for us, strawberry deliveries to groceries and co-ops ramp up in March, and that’s when our box collecting team mobilizes. FSM parent John Levin heads the team of volunteers who visit produce departments, gather the saved boxes, haul them home, and store them in their garages, on porches and other nooks and crannies.
We need several more people to help out this year. Our goal is to collect 10,000 boxes again this year. That’s a lot of boxes, but we can do it with enough volunteers.
Here’s how it works. We have teams of parents collecting from several different stores. If you can help out one or two days a week, we’ll hook you up with a team at a store near you.You simply stop into the store on your scheduled day and pick up the boxes.
You store the boxes at your house on your porch or in your garage. Then, on April 19 and again the week of the sale, we’ll drop by your house and collect your boxes. It’s easy and it’s fun.
If you can’t help with collection, but have some extra space in your garage, we can use that, too!
