In art class, seventh and eighth graders got their eyes and observation skills in gear by making “cut-away drawings.”
This project required them to find a picture in a magazine and cut away parts of the picture. The remaining parts were pasted down on drawing paper and the students re-drew the parts that were cut away.
This drawing exercise forced students to look closely at the values (lights and darks) in the picture in order to match the drawn parts to the original image.
