Simplicity is a core Quaker value. A query printed in the Cannon Valley Friends Meeting newsletter asks:

“Do I recognize when I have enough?”

It’s hard not to think about this in December when consumerism slaps us in the face: newspapers print photos of shoppers who line up for hours to be among the first to get in to the store, magazines help us figure out appropriate gifts for everyone on our list (neighbors, colleagues, haircutters), and our inboxes are full of holiday sale notices. Most people agree it is over the top.

My wish for all of us this winter break is that we make space to hold that query in January, and every day after.
